The High Cost of Failure
For any serious pickleball brand, getting the “USAPA Approved” stamp is mandatory for tournament play. But here is the scary reality: Many paddles fail the first round of testing. A failure doesn’t just mean losing the $1,500+ testing fee—it means months of delay while you redesign and resubmit.
As an experienced manufacturer, Joying Pickleball understands the strict USAPA approved paddle requirements inside and out. Here is what they are testing, and how we ensure you pass.
1. The Deflection Test (The “Trampoline” Effect)

This test measures how “bouncy” or powerful the paddle is. The USAPA doesn’t want paddles that launch the ball like a rocket launcher.
- The Standard: The paddle is placed on a rigid stand, and a weight is dropped on it. The paddle cannot bend (deflect) more than a specific limit.
- The Gen 3 Challenge: Thermoformed paddles are notoriously powerful. Without precise core tuning, they often fail the deflection test standard.
- Our Solution: We adjust the stiffness of the core and the resin ratio to ensure your paddle sits right in the “Sweet Spot”—powerful enough for pros, but legal for USAPA.
2. Surface Roughness (The Spin Limit)
Everyone wants maximum spin, but there is a limit.
- The Standard: The USAPA measures “average roughness” (Rz) and “peak height” (Rt) using a Starrett profilometer.
- The Keywords: You need to understand surface roughness test rz rt.
- If your Rt (Peak to Valley) is too high, the paddle is deemed too abrasive (damages the ball).
- If your Rz is too high, it generates “illegal” spin.
- Our Solution: Whether using Peel Ply or our new Hybrid Nano-texture, we measure every batch with our in-house profilometer to ensure it stays within the legal Green Zone.
3. Gloss Test (Anti-Glare)

A shiny paddle can blind an opponent in the sun.
- The Standard: The surface must be matte.
- Our Solution: Our UV printing and Raw Carbon finishes are naturally matte, easily passing the Gloss guidelines.
Why Choose Joying for USAPA Projects?
We don’t just “guess and hope.” We have an In-House Testing Lab. Before we ship your samples to the official USAPA facility in the USA, we run the exact same tests in our factory in China.
- Pre-test Deflection
- Pre-test Roughness
- Pre-test Dimensions
If it doesn’t pass our lab, it doesn’t leave our door. This guarantees a 99% pass rate for our clients.
